2024 Surf Art Calendar - Tony Rogondino

2024 Surf Art Calendar

 October

“Zarautz Sunrise”

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

In the summer of 2023, I found myself back in the Spanish Basque Country, a place that holds a special place for me. Emilie was off playing soccer with Inspire FC, and I was soaking up every moment of our trip, sipping wine, surfing and enjoying the purest sense of contentment. One thing I’ve come to realize over the years is that no matter where I go, I create my own little routine. It’s as if I find comfort in the small, familiar rituals. Every day while we stayed in Zarautz, a small beach town similar to Hermosa Beach, I would start my morning with a quiet walk from our hotel to the beach, checking the surf. After that, I’d come back to savor a classic European breakfast—fresh bread, rich coffee, and ripe fruit.

Returning to Spain was like coming full circle, especially after my time studying in San Sebastián years ago in college. Walking the same streets, revisiting favorite spots, and reconnecting with friends from 25+ years ago was a beautiful, nostalgic experience.

One morning, just before the trip was over, I caught this breathtaking view. You’d think it was a sunset, but it was actually the sunrise on the second-to-last day of our stay. It’s amazing what you can find if you rise early enough to catch the first light.

Through it all, my greatest joy has been watching Emilie excel on the soccer field. She’s not just winning games—she’s having fun, building friendships, and making memories. And in 2024, she returned to Spain—this time Madrid—and crushed it all over again, chasing more fun and life experiences.

This scene could easily inspire a picture capturing a calm seaside morning, the soft golden hues of dawn breaking over the horizon, reflecting both the quiet beauty of the landscape and the pride I feel in witnessing Emilie’s journey.
