2024 Surf Art Calendar - Paul Towers

2024 Surf Art Calendar

July

“Stars and Stripes”

By: Paul Towers

Story Behind The Image - Paul Towers, an Ocean Lifeguard and avid Open Water Marathon Swimmer, captured this image while visiting the Hawaiian Islands last September. He was on O’ahu to compete in the 2.4 Mile Waikiki Rough Water Swim, held every Labor Day. In 2018, 2019, and most recently in September 2023, Paul completed his 5th channel crossing, this time swimming from the island of Mau’i to the island of Lana’i in 5 hours and 44 minutes. His swims across the channels that separate these beautiful islands have deepened his connection, respect and love for the Hawaiian Islands, inspiring him to photograph and share their natural beauty. This picture titled “Stars and Stripes” was taken with one of O’ahu’s most picturesque backdrops, Diamond Head. Paul's deep sense of connectedness with the Hawaiian Islands is evident in his work, as he strives to capture and share their natural beauty with others.

Personal Connection - I originally met Paul at the opening night for Gallery 208 in Manhattan Beach, not realizing that he was the dad of Emilie’s good friend Syd. We connected on both being from San Diego, the art on hand and I discovered he was also a great photographer. I’m very grateful for his contributions to the 2024 Surf Art Calendar Cover and this months shot of the American flag in honor of the 4th of July
