“South Bay Biggest Wave of the Winter 2018_2019”
By: Richard Podgurski Jr.
STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE
From the artist: This was one of the biggest swells to march thru the South Bay in years and still haven’t seen one as big since. It was a very long morning and afternoon, watching each and every mega set roll in. I couldn’t leave. I even had friends bring me lunch to keep me going. Then once low tide peaked, this shot came to life. It was a historic day of surfing in the South Bay to say to the least.
PERSONAL CONNECTION
I discovered Richard through his Instagram page from a post he shared of a remarkable image that he had taken of a local lightning storm in the winter of 2021 and have been a big fan of his work ever since. He’s a true South Bay local that has captured an iconic moment in local surf culture with the Wave of the Winter, showcasing the beauty and power of the ocean at one of our local breaks. I’m very grateful that he’s allowed me to share this image with you for the Surf Art Calendar and please take a minute to dive in deeper on this incredible talent.
