2022 Surf Art Calendar - Erik Abel

2022 Surf Art Calendar

December

“Northern Sol 2”

By: Erik Abel

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

From the artist: "Northern Sol 2” was inspired by my time living and surfing in the mighty Pacific Northwest. I don’t normally create art based on any particular location, so this piece is just a conglomeration of memories from exploring the Oregon coast. I like to create these little secret surf scenes of places I’d like to be, and this empty right hander is no exception.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

In doing research for the 2022 Surf Art Calendar, I kept coming across Erik’s work online and it felt very familiar. I identified with it personally by seeing it from the perspective of a surfer of similar age who has traveled extensively in search of great waves and adventure. What I really liked about this piece is the feeling of discovery in how the mountains and trees reveal perfect surf in the rugged Pacific Northwest. The shapes he uses to convey this feeling all create balance and showcase the art in a way that draws the viewer in.

In addition, I recognized his artwork from surf culture, where his work has been featured as the key art for the World Surf League Finals at Lower Trestles, highlighted on clothes for some of my favorite surf brands such as Patagonia, Billabong and Reef, and grateful he was willing to share his original design with us. Please do yourself a favor and check out more of Erik’s work at Abelarts.com or on Instagram @Abelarts where you will see pieces that continue with this year’s theme containing mixed medium canvas and showcase his distinct style.

ARTIST BIO

Bold colors, geometric patterns, and botanical profiles capture the eye in Erik Abel’s artwork. Inspired by his love of the ocean, surfing and travel, Abel’s work articulates the spirit of the water and awe of nature. His roots as a California surfer intermingle with his experiences living in the Pacific Northwest as well as traveling to South Pacific and Central America, imparting an organic, tribal style to his subjects and compositions. Upon a closer look, Abel’s graphic imagery unfolds to tell the story of his paintings. Accents peak through unexpectedly revealing the layers of color Abel cloaks in each piece while loose strokes of colored pencil create detail and dimension. Abel now lives and works in Ashland, Oregon. His original pieces have been featured in galleries across the country and abroad while his commercial work has attracted clients including Patagonia, Reef, REI, and Billabong. Abel gives back to environmental and humanitarian projects through nonprofit partnerships, exhibitions and commercial projects.
