“Bird 4th Lot”

By: Zack Lobisch

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

From the Artist: The inspiration for "Bird 4th Lot" is in the morning at the neighborhood I grew up in, as a small but nice-looking wave breaks in glassy conditions. The original was a commission piece for a friend, but I have sold prints of it too. This piece brings back memories of the salty sea air and morning fog on a mild winter morning.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

Zack and I have known each other since Elementary School and he has always been an incredible creative talent, who has blazed his own path. He is one of the most creative, talented and driven artists I know. A true eclectic mind who sees the world from a unique perspective. Not measuring himself to anything but his true intentions and worth a follow on Facebook or Instagram.

We both claim to hold the title of “First Drummer” to play with the Reggae band Slightly Stoopid, it just depends who you ask, Miles or Kyle. We both grew up in the same area of Point Loma in San Diego, which some would call an umbilical town. The metaphor especially holds true to the beach in the painting that he calls “Bird 4th Lot”, where no matter how far you travel away from it, everyone who grew up there seems to still have a special connection to the place.

I asked him if I could include this painting because of the sentimental value it has for me. I spent more than a lifetime on this beach in my youth learning to surf there, riding waves of all sizes and conditions. I learned to navigate the rampant localism of the 80’s/90’s where if you paddled out with a leash on, you were immediately given a dirty look from a local. Ultimately, I learned what it means to give and get respect in the line-up of those who came before you. The wave wasn’t world class, but at the same time it was the most magical wave on the planet to my group of friends… truly a place that nourished the youth of Sunset Cliffs, like a mother’s womb.

ARTIST BIO

I am originally from San Diego CA, where I spent my younger days surfing, swimming, sailing, and doing anything in or near the water. I learned about the ocean and its natural power, and how to negotiate with caution. After living in California, I decided to travel the USA and see what was out there. I am currently an ocean lifeguard on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where I enjoy Hurricane swells and sailing a trimaran sailboat that I designed and built from scratch. Anything adventurous in the water is inspiring as I look for new ways to enjoy the beauty of the ocean. IG: zlobischart
